Limbo - A Practice Novel by Glenn Campbell
Limbo was my "practice" novel, written in less than two months as a challenge to myself. On Dec. 19, 2013, I woke up from a dream and decided to turn it into a novel. I had only one scene from the story in my head: a man running away from something on beach. The rest I had to figure out on the fly. I intended to write one chapter a day, and once a chapter was written, I didn't allow myself to change it. (I could only fix typos and obvious clarity problems, but I couldn't alter the narrative.) I announced what I was doing on Facebook and set a target of 60 days to complete and publish it.
The novel was uploaded as an ebook on Amazon on Feb. 12, 2014, "on time and under budget." To me, the most remarkable thing about this novel is that I finished it! I had started many novels in the past, but this was the first one I completed.
On Oct. 18, 2016, I removed this novel from Amazon because I didn't want it to distract from my much more sophisticated novel, Harper Junction, which I started writing immediately after I finished Limbo. That one took 10 months to write and was based on a story I had been thinking about for years.
I am now offering Limbo for free to interested readers. Just download this PDF. However, I urge you to read Harper Junction first, as that is the better novel. (A generous free sample is available on Amazon.) Although I letting individuals read it, I still reserve all rights, and I could withdraw the free version at any time.
Here is the description of Limbo as it appeared on Amazon...
The monotony of Paradise is relieved only by the experiments. Every day he reports for duty in some kind of underground laboratory. Every day he is the subject of bizarre tests, arranged by experimenters he cannot see. Someone is probing him, provoking him, pushing into a series of events he doesn’t understand.
Every evening, he returns home to the beach, to the perfect little bungalow on the shore where the woman cooks him dinner and cares for all his physical needs. Who is this lady? Some sort of actress? And how could she be so perfect? Not a blemish on her skin!
He is a lab rat, and he knows it, but this is not a painful life. He could get used to it if time only gave him the chance. This world—whatever it is, wherever it is—is disintegrating. The beach is getting smaller. It is being riddled with bizarre defects. Whatever force is maintaining this place is losing its power.
Only his past can save him. His only hope for escape is to find out who he was and how he got here. This place is Limbo—halfway between life and death—and death seems to be gaining the upper hand. As the horror of his true situation unfolds, he must face the fact that he alone put himself here.
Limbo is the product of his own bad choices, and only his own actions can get him out.
FROM THE AUTHOR: "This was my first novel. I wasn't planning to write one, but I woke up one morning with a starting idea. I saw a man on a beach trying to escape from something. I didn't know who he was or what he was running from. I had to work it out as I went along. My goal was to complete a novel in 60 days, and I succeeded, uploading it to Amazon on the 58th day. I have no idea if this novel is any good. The only thing important to me was that I finished it."
